Classical yet contemporary

| BGT | Reference

James Simon was one of the most important patrons of Wilhelminian Berlin. To honour this generosity, the entrance building to the Museum Island, to be built in 2019, bears his name: the James Simon Gallery. It serves as a welcoming gateway and offers visitors amenities such as a café, auditorium and exhibition spaces.

Designed by David Chipperfield Architects, the gallery features clean lines, minimalist forms and a prominent colonnade that recalls classical architecture while maintaining a contemporary aesthetic.

Constructed primarily of pale concrete, glass and natural stone, the building creates a sense of openness and transparency. This effect is enhanced by the unique glass product we supplied for the entrance glazing: BICOMBISET, a laminated safety glass with a 6mm layer of natural stone. The marble chosen is from Thassos and, depending on the incidence of light, has a pale grey flat surface or a translucent look that allows the interior light to shine through elegantly.
