Continuity and change on Observatory Hill

| OKALUX | Reference

How can an established school campus in a dense urban setting evolve without losing its identity? The extension of Fort Street Public School in Sydney, designed by FJMT, offers a considered response.

On the prominent site of Observatory Hill, heritage buildings meet new volumes that integrate naturally into the ensemble. Courtyards, visual connections and carefully placed links structure the campus and connect it with the city and harbour. This creates a spatial sequence that supports orientation while offering a variety of places to stay.

In the new building, the façade takes on a central role. With OKATECH Copper, the building envelope becomes a finely tuned filter. Expanded metal meshes integrated into the insulating glass respond to changing daylight, allowing the surface to appear different throughout the day while giving the building a calm, warm presence.

At the same time, the system meets precise functional requirements, combining aesthetic quality with performance.
