Light Preserves History

| OKALUX | Reference

The Jewish Museum in Rendsburg is housed in the only surviving historic synagogue in Schleswig-Holstein.

As a place of remembrance, dialogue and cultural exchange, it connects Jewish history with contemporary use. As part of an extensive restoration, Werkbüro für Architektur Vögele & Carstensen carefully revitalised the historic prayer hall, carrying its architectural character into the present with great sensitivity.

A defining feature of the space is its series of historic arched windows. For their reconstruction, OKALUX manufactured 375 individually produced insulating glass units in a wide variety of bespoke shapes and geometries, precisely matching the original window patterns and preserving the building's distinctive architectural identity.

The project features light-diffusing OKALUX insulating glass with an integrated capillary slab. It distributes daylight evenly and virtually shadow-free deep into the prayer hall, enhancing the unique atmosphere of the historic interior. At the same time, the glazing combines excellent solar control, glare protection and thermal insulation, while light transmission can be individually tailored to the specific requirements of the listed building.

The result is a glazing solution that respectfully complements the historic fabric while demonstrating how contemporary daylighting technology can enrich heritage architecture.
