The approximately 14,000 m² building brings together prayer spaces, educational facilities and cultural uses within a clearly structured architectural composition and is harmoniously embedded in expansive gardens along Buffalo Bayou.
A central design motif is the reinterpretation of eivans – large, covered halls open on multiple sides that function as climatically protected transition spaces between interior and exterior. These architectural elements not only create fluid spatial transitions but also shape the quality of space. This concept is complemented by slender steel columns, precisely articulated façades and large-format glazing, which guide daylight deep into the building and create a bright, open atmosphere.
In a project of this complexity, glazing plays a key role. BGT Bischoff Glastechnik, a company of the Glas Trösch Group, contributed its expertise in custom glass solutions and developed project-specific glazing tailored to the architectural and climatic requirements. For the Ismaili Center, BGT supplied a wide range of bespoke glass products precisely adapted to the respective applications.
In total, several thousand square metres of glazing were realised – from large-scale façade elements to complex interior applications. The different glass configurations combine high transparency, safety and excellent climatic performance. In this way, they make a significant contribution to the architectural concept while ensuring functionality under the conditions of Houston’s subtropical climate.
The Ismaili Center Houston exemplifies architecture that brings together cultural identity, social openness and contemporary design in a coherent overall concept.
