Originally designed by Mockridge Stahle & Mitchell, the project brings together the existing structure and new facilities for teaching, rehearsal and performance in a coherent architectural composition. The redevelopment was led by Peter Elliott Architecture + Urban Design.
A defining feature of the project is the continuous façade banding realised with OKATECH Copper, allowing the distinctive butterfly roof to appear almost weightless. The expanded metal mesh integrated within the insulating glass acts as a finely calibrated filter between daylight, transparency and privacy. As lighting conditions change throughout the day, the copper mesh subtly modulates the perception of depth and materiality across the building envelope.
Together with our Australian partner Architectural Glass & Cladding, OKALUX was pleased to contribute to the realization of this architecturally refined façade solution.
The project received several distinctions, including the Heritage Architecture Award and the Educational Architecture Award from the Australian Institute of Architects.
